Perry Street (a restaurant rave)

Hi. Just wanted to rave a little about a fantastic dining experience we had last night (Saturday).

We went to dinner at Jean-George Vongrichten's latest restaurant, Perry Street. Surprise, surprise, Perry Street (the restaurant) is on Perry Street (the street) in the West Village (at West Street, which is as far as you can get before you'd fall into the Hudson River). Of course, Jean-Georges is a superstar chef, so you can only expect awe and wonderment with his food, but this was simply outstanding - and a VERY hip/cool/funky interior design, also. The restaurant is about a year old, I think.

Fiona had an amazing halibut dish, which fused classic French flavors with Thai aromas and tastes. I had the crunchy rabbit, which was out-of-this-world brilliant. Desert was, of course, great, and the amuse buche was kind of fun - sweet corn soup with popcorn salt! That was really the only showy, uber-trendy, funky flavored thing we had - the rest (i.e., the mains, et al) was superbly thought-out and beautifully executed, and certainly innovative without being of the "see how wonderful a chef I am, I can make balsamic vinegar icecream taste great" variety.

Service was great, the wine list was the right length and the vibe was subdued while mantaining a very notable hipness to it; sort of a "this is a cool place to be with special people" (of course). Pretentious? No, thankfully! And it was a nice touch that Mr. Vongrichten himself happened to be there (he has a gazillion restaurants, so it is nice to be there on a night that he's in the house).

Come visit and you too can enjoy the nice parts of living in such a fantastic city; in this case, the fantastic dining offerings.

A.
